Assumptions and limits
- Density taken as 7,850 kg/m³, the conventional figure for structural steel.
- Cast iron and stainless steel sit either side of this — use the material density from the mill certificate if the alloy matters.
- Volume must be of solid steel only. Hollow sections need the void subtracted.
