Channel weight calculator
Mass of a channel from its cross-sectional area and length.
Inputs
cm²
From IS 808 or the section table.
m
Result
0.008kg
0.1 cm² × 0.1 m × 0.785
Formula
W = A × L × 7.85 × 10⁻³ [kg, A in cm², L in m]
An estimate for take-off, not a design check. Structural design, member sizing and connection capacity are separate calculations made by the responsible design authority.
Assumptions and limits
- Takes section area as an input rather than deriving it, because a channel cannot be reduced to leg dimensions without its root radius and taper.
- Read the area from IS 808 or the mill certificate for the exact section.
- One cm² of steel one metre long weighs 0.785 kg — that is where the constant comes from.
