Steel truss bridge span collapse during launching, Hamirpur
Hamirpur, Himachal Pradesh
A span of an under-construction steel truss bridge on the Shimla–Mataur corridor collapsed during launching operations at Hamirpur.
This is an engineering education case study compiled from public reporting. It is not an official investigation report, and no failure mechanism described here is asserted as the cause of this incident. AKEN was not involved.

What happened
A span of an under-construction steel truss bridge on the Shimla–Mataur corridor collapsed during launching operations at Hamirpur.
Reported findings
These are separated deliberately. What an investigation has established, what reporters observed, and what nobody knows yet are three different things, and collapsing them into one narrative is how an educational case study turns into rumour.
Officially confirmed
- A steel truss bridge under construction on the Shimla–Mataur corridor collapsed.
- The collapse occurred during launching of the span.
- A rescue operation followed.
Investigation findings
No investigation report has been published in the sources reviewed.
Media-reported observations
- Five people were reported injured and six were feared trapped in early coverage.
Unknown or unconfirmed
- The launching method, equipment and temporary support arrangement in use.
- The stage the launch had reached at the moment of collapse.
- The condition of launching equipment and its inspection history.
- The cause. No official finding has been published.
Engineering analysis
What the relevant engineering principles are — not what happened here. This section explains how structures of this type behave, so that the reader can apply the same reasoning to their own project.
Launching is a continuous temporary condition
Incremental launching pushes a completed span forward over temporary supports until it reaches its permanent bearings. Throughout the push the span is a cantilever of changing length, and the bending moment at the trailing support grows and then reverses as the leading end passes each pier. The structure is never in the condition it was designed for until the launch finishes, so every intermediate position needs checking — not just the start and the end.
The leading cantilever governs
The critical case is usually the maximum leading cantilever, when the span projects furthest past the last support with no counterweight or with the counterweight not yet mobilised. Deflection at the nose, stability of the truss against lateral movement, and the reaction at the trailing support all peak somewhere in the middle of the operation rather than at either end.
Equipment is part of the structure
Launching jacks, strand jacks, rollers and sliding bearings are load-carrying components. Their rated capacity, condition, calibration and inspection status are engineering inputs, not site logistics. A jack or a strand that fails during a push is a structural failure, because at that moment it is carrying the span.
Lateral stability of a truss under launch
A truss is efficient in its own plane and weak out of it. During launching, before the deck and bracing are complete, lateral restraint and the avoidance of torsional movement are governing concerns, and the temporary restraint arrangement has to be designed alongside the longitudinal push.
Potential failure mechanisms
Read this before the list. These are mechanisms that are consistent with a collapse of this type. They are engineering possibilities for study. None of them is asserted as the cause of this incident, and no official investigation has established one.
Overstressing during launch
A span position producing a bending moment or reaction beyond the design intent.
Temporary support failure
A launch pier, tower or temporary bearing not carrying what was assumed.
Equipment failure
A jack, strand, roller or bearing failing under load.
Lateral instability
Loss of lateral restraint or torsional movement during the push.
Uneven or uncontrolled movement
Differential jacking causing unintended forces in the truss.
Preventive engineering measures
The part of the page that is useful on a live project. These are controls that would have to be in place before the conditions for a collapse of this class could arise.
- Analyse every position of the launch, not only its start and end.
- Design temporary supports and launch equipment as load-carrying structures with defined capacities.
- Inspect and certify launching equipment before the operation and record it.
- Control lateral restraint and torsional movement explicitly during the push.
- Define stop criteria — wind, movement, load readings — and brief them to the operators.
- Synchronise jacking and monitor it against calculated values as the span moves.
Inspection checklist
A starting point for a site-specific checklist, not a substitute for one. Adapt it to the actual structure, sequence and specifications of the job in front of you.
- 01Launch analysis covering all positions, with governing cases identified?
- 02Temporary support capacities defined and checked?
- 03Launching equipment inspected, calibrated and certified?
- 04Lateral restraint arrangement designed and installed?
- 05Reactions monitored against calculated values during the push?
- 06Stop-work criteria for wind and movement defined and briefed?
- 07Emergency procedure for a stalled or jammed launch in place?
